Give Me Spanx or Give Me Death.

There are certain clothes I own that look better on me with Spanx. Plain and simple. I know that when I wear my Lee Jeans from BlogHer I need to bust out the flab reducer. (Don’t worry, I’m not being compensated to say this. They’re just the smallest pair I own.)

Let’s face it. Everything looks better with Spanx. Especially after kids.

I didn’t ever completely bounce back after being pregnant. My stomach mainly – which bothers me. I lost weight this summer, but it’s still there.

There is no quarter bouncing off it. [Read more...]

One Christian’s View on the Separation of Church and State

For many people, the fact that prayer is no longer allowed in public school is a travesty. After all, our country was founded on Christian values – so why shouldn’t we continue that? Why shouldn’t we start the day with a prayer or a Bible reading in our public schools?

As I consider homeschooling, this thought crosses my mind often. Raised in a conservative church and a Christian home, it was often brought up around me (although my parents didn’t discuss it that I can remember) in the Christian schools I attended, and the camps I went to. People felt their rights had been taken away, or that they were being discriminated against. It wasn’t fair that we were no longer allowed to pray during school hours, that the day didn’t start with a mandatory prayer time.

Here’s my two cents: [Read more...]

For Better or Worse

There was a point in my marriage I thought of leaving Sam nearly every day. At least every weekend. He would drink, we would fight, and by Sunday I was so miserable all I wanted to do was to walk out the door and never come back to the mess we’d made.

Because we’ve all been raised in a society that encourages our need to feel happy and comfortable above almost anything else, the thought of living as we were became unbearable. Everywhere I turned I saw/heard/read that I should leave. Because I deserved better. And when I didn’t go anywhere, I started to beat myself up mentally for that failure as well. I’d threaten to leave then went nowhere. Maybe around the block. It became a joke. The night before I actually did leave Sam, I told him I.was.done. He rolled his eyes and snorted. I can’t blame him, I probably had said those words a half million times. [Read more...]

I’m doing the best I can. So back off.

Lately Bella has been a handful. A mess of epic proportions, from not sleeping good to having temper tantrums to just being a general disaster. She hates crowds, noise and has separation/stranger anxiety to the max. I know this. It’s not an easy stage.

So imagine my pure, unadulterated delight when someone thoughtfully told me the other day, “It’s not good for her to just be with you all day. She needs other people around so she can be more social and not so clingy.”

Straight out of a Movie Scene

Yesterday I took Bella to Chipotle for lunch. As we sat down, I noticed the table next to us had two girls in their late teens/early twenties chatting away.

One of them looked like she just stepped off a movie set. Dolce and Gabbana glasses, high heels and skinny jeans, perfect hair and makeup. She’s picking at a salad. Her friend is more low key; sandals, torn up jeans, messy hair.

Being less than 3 feet away, and having a rather poor conversationalist sitting with me, I can’t help but overhear them. I don’t really listen in right away until:

Low Key girl: “I’m just not really sure what to do, it’s so hard, you know? I need to dress thinner I think.”

D&G girl: “You either need to lose weight or get a boob job. It’s that simple.” [Read more...]

The Point of Birth

With all the intense debates these days about med free births, drug free labor, vbacs, c-sections, home births, epi’s, doulas, midwives, obstetricians, and birth plans – it seems some of us have a skewed image of what the point of birth really is.

It isn’t a contest.

It isn’t about showing off how tough you are.

It isn’t about being made to feel like a disappointment when your plans change. [Read more...]
